Leading in Times of Stress

Kevin Johnson, LeadTandem Consulting

Organizational leadership is hard, demanding, and not for the faint of heart.

For many human resource professionals and managers, your responsibilities include maximizing the efficiency of departments and teams, increasing ROI, de-escalating client concerns, managing/motivating employees, all while being accountable for the overall success of your team/organization.

Unfortunately, the burden that comes with these responsibilities often causes burnout. A 2021 survey found that 60% of leaders feel used up at the end of the workday, which is a strong indicator for burnout. You may be able to relate.

Too many times the prescription for burnout is “more effective time management strategies.” These strategies can be useful, but they are incomplete because they fail to recognize the root cause of the burnout. We must properly diagnose the problem before we can prescribe the right solution. The main cause for burnout is too much stress.

Becoming a resilient leader is less about working harder (“just push through it”) and more about developing an appropriate and effective framework and pattern for approaching work and people.

In this session, you will learn how to elevate your threshold for discomfort and how to remain meaningfully engaged with your teams even when you don’t want to and you feel like going crazy. The results of your newly found clear-headedness will be less burnout, a decrease in leadership turnover, and an increase in employee engagement.
